A pilot is on approach to land a B737 or larger aircraft. How often may he need to change ATC radar frequency?

Is that a nuisance or can it present difficulties? How long does it take to change frequency? Presumably there are times when a pilot would prefer not to need to do this? eg tired, poor visibility, difficult winds, short slippery runway
