I believe the independent variable in this experiment is the choice of metals. Independent variables are the ones which the experimenter controls. Dependent variables are the result of the experiment. The experimenter controlled the choice of metals. The dependent variable was the length of time it took for the wax to melt and for the pins to fall off.
